Challenging Times Mean Opportunity
Posted by Elizabeth Zelinka
For corporate law firms, corporate lawyers and professionals who serve the legal industry, these are difficult times. Everything has changed, almost overnight. There is a sense of uncertainty, even calamity, especially in the case of professionals who have lost clients, books of business and jobs. Almost no one working in the legal industry today has lived through a time so filled with challenges and sudden reversals of fortune.
While all of that is true, there will still be those who thrive in these times, and even because of these times. Those people understand something fundamental, and I doubt I can say it better than this:
“Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they’re supposed to help you discover who you are.” Bernice Johnson Reagon
The dramatic changes in the legal industry are all about the disintegration of ideas, beliefs and attitudes that no longer work. This is a good thing, and frankly, after the dust settles, law firms and lawyers alike will have entered a new and improved era of legal practice and client service.
In the meantime, those who have been pushed out of law firms might start using the word “liberated” instead of “laid off.” Reframe the situation as an opportunity to create something new and discover more about yourself, and you might start feeling downright fortunate.
