A Chance to Challenge the Status Quo

Posted by Elizabeth Zelinka

If you are a talented professional—lawyer, investment banker, mortgage broker, marketing director—who has been laid off or is facing the strong possibility of a layoff, half the battle is in reframing what is happening into a positive thing.  Here is my suggestion—see it as an opportunity to challenge the status quo.

You have been forced into the unknown—a step you might never have taken on your own.  Your first instinct (the one in line with the status quo) might be to scramble toward any opportunity that resembles (even slightly) what you just left.  At first blush, it makes sense—familiarity and feelings of security often go hand in hand.  Another option, however, is to see this as your big chance to reinvent yourself and your life into what you have always wanted.

Mark Twain once said, “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”  His point is well taken.  This is a chance to stop everything, move away from the pack, and find out exactly what you (and only you) want for your career and life.  Let’s face it—the timing for a big, scary change is never right.  But since you are confronting it anyway, why not make the most of it?
